Beautiful Country & Beautiful People

NO PLASTIC BAGS

I was flying into Tanzania when the pilot announced “No plastic bags are allowed in the country - so to please leave them on the plane.” I loved this and the result is a beautiful country not marred by litter. Tanzania is a top world producer of sisal, and sacks made from this environmentally friendly agricultural product are used here.

FOOD

My favorite Tanzanian drink was blended with avocado and passion fruit - smooth, balanced and perfect! There was plenty of delicious vegetarian food too. Typical meals included beans in coconut sauce, spicy pea soup, a traditional seasonal greens dish called Mboga Majani, a local slaw and chapati. Fruits in season included: papaya, banana, jakfruit, pineapple, avocado and oranges.

Restaurants had sinks at their entrances for washing before and after meals. At fast food places, the ‘sink’ is a simple bucket of water with a spigot attached. I loved this ritual as its feels like one is preparing for a spiritual experience - which a great meal can be!

PEOPLE

The women of Tanzania are always beautifully dressed, even when they are working in the field. Everyone was quick with a smile, a wave, or a friendly nod.

It seems that all life happens alongside the road in Tanzania. There is constant movement. People are engaging in daily tasks which involves a lot of walking and carrying goods - mostly food. Life appears simpler, and movement happens at a more relaxed pace. People look happy rather than stressed. They may be poor by our standards, but it feels like they are wealthy in the abundance of food growing all around, and in the richness of their relationships.

The people and the land have such vibrance!
