GEORGETOWN

FARM FRESH PRODUCE GALORE!

I loved going exploring in downtown Georgetown and just looking at all the fresh produce. There are several large markets in town and produce stands line the road on the highway to the farm. Some vendors have piles of fresh coconuts and offer to cut one open for your immediate refreshment.

CITY SITES

It makes the city streets so interesting to see the combination of horses, carts, cars and bicycles. St. George’s Cathedral is an Anglican church entirely made of wood and completed in 1899. The 1763 Monument is in honor of Cuffy, a rebellious enslaved person who became a national hero in Guyana by leading the first rebellion in the country’s anti-colonial struggle.

THE PEOPLE

I am working at asking people if I may take their photo. I feel a bit like I’m intruding, but am committing to asking anyway. I tend to take nature only photos but find that pictures of local people round out the story and capture such a sense of place.

The woman, in the first photo below, is crocheting a cover for a chair while she is waiting for customers at her booth along the seawall. I admire her big undertaking. Michael is a cab driver on a break who I met walking along the seawall. He is my age and has been vegetarian as long as I have! The three young men are practicing for the kite competition which is Easter weekend at the seawall.

The rain covered street photo represents a serendipitous interaction. I had walked into town looking for a stationary store. I found the store, but when I came out, it started raining and I didn’t have an umbrella with me. I passed a disabled man who walked with a pronounced hobble and to my surprise he simply handed one of his two umbrellas to me as we passed. It was such a gracious and generous act! I was so thankful since it had started really pouring and I had a 20 minute walk back to the hotel. It reminded me that sometimes those with the least give the most, and of how a helping hand can just show up when least expected and most needed!

OCEAN SIGHTS

Watching shipping traffic from my room at the Pegasus Hotel. In the morning, it was ships heading out and in the evening, it was incoming ships. It was fascinating to notice the types of ships and the amount of cargo they carried.

Up next… Roaring water!!!
