WHY ARMENIA
It all started with Tom’s around the world blog…
My interest in Armenia started with following Tom Allen who was blogging about his around the world bicycling adventure: tomsbiketrip. Long story short: when Tom was in Armenia, he fell in love (check out the movie: Janapar, Love on a Bike). Fast forward: he started the TCT organization in Armenia and he and his wife, Tenny, operate the Hiker’s Hostel in Dilijan. Through the TCT newsletter, I learned about a supported hike along the Legends Trail in southern Armenia. I was curious as I have not been to this part of the world, so I jumped on it, arriving in September for a two-week trek.
The TransCaucasian Trail traverses the Caucasus Mountains through Georgia and Armenia for 1,500 miles. The TransCaucasian Trail NGO (TCT) has been working diligently for the past six years scouting, mapping and developing trails to bring local and international hikers to these now well marked hiking trails. This development is increasing economic activity in the towns along the route while bringing attention to the region’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Yerevan - the Capital of Armenia
Yerevan is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city! It is a very walkable city with lots of parks and trees throughout. Most people speak English. I stayed in the Kantar Hostel, a modern hostel in walking distance to everything so I went exploring….
At the Vernissage Market
The best market in town is the Vernissage Market because it has such a diversity of crafts for sale. On the weekend, it blows up with more vendors and great people watching. There are rugs, lots of jewelry, ceramics, handmade wooden canes and chess sets, and so much more.
Looking forward to getting my hiking shoes on the trail…
